Fake Medical Emergency Attack On Prison Guard Leads To Massive Jailbreak As Seventeen Undertrials Escape Tamil Nadu Prison Triggering Statewide Manhunt
A massive manhunt is currently underway across southern Tamil Nadu following an audacious jailbreak where seventeen undertrial prisoners overpowered prison wardens and escaped into the dark. The incident occurred at the Thekkampatti sub-jail near Andipatti in Theni district, a facility housing over five hundred inmates from across multiple southern districts. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the inmates planned a coordinated deception late at night, creating a staged health crisis inside their communal cell before ambushing security staff and fleeing through the main gates of the detention compound.
According to initial reports from prison administrators, the escape plan was set into motion when one of the undertrials began loudly complaining of a severe epileptic seizure. Hearing cries for help from inside the locked cell, on-duty prison constable Thangapandi rushed to the enclosure and unlocked the iron door to provide urgent medical assistance. The moment the cell was opened, the group of seventeen inmates launched a sudden and violent assault on the officer. The guard was attacked with blunt force, sustaining deep head injuries and falling to the floor. Two other prison staff members who rushed forward to help were also assaulted and received multiple injuries before the prisoners rushed past them and escaped into the outside streets.
Injured staff members were swiftly moved to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku, where constable Thangapandi is receiving medical care for severe head trauma. Medical teams confirmed that his vital signs are stable, while the other two officers were discharged after receiving first aid for minor cuts and bruises. Immediately after the alarm was raised, senior police commanders, including South Zone Inspector General of Police Vijayendra Bidari, arrived at the sub-jail facility to inspect the scene, examine video footage, and establish emergency coordination desks.
In response to the unprecedented escape, the state police department formed seventeen specialized tactical search teams to track down the fugitives across rural landscapes, railway corridors, and bus terminals. Search dogs and forensic investigators were brought in to gather physical evidence around the prison perimeter and nearby forest tracks. Coordinated combing operations have yielded early results, with police successfully apprehending four of the seventeen escapees during search drives in surrounding villages. Interrogation of the captured individuals is helping authorities map out the escape routes taken by the remaining thirteen prisoners still on the run.
To prevent the fugitives from crossing into neighboring states, security has been tightened along all major transport routes heading toward Kerala. In neighboring Dindigul district, police have established round-the-clock checkpoints at sixteen strategic junction points, carrying out rigorous searches of all public transport buses, private vans, and freight lorries. Photographs and descriptions of the undertrials, many of whom hail from Madurai district and face trials under stringent public order laws, have been circulated to police stations and transit hubs across the state.
The dramatic prison break has exposed glaring vulnerabilities in custodial protocols and emergency response routines within the correctional system. Security analysts noted that single guards should never enter high-capacity cells without backup coverage, especially during late-night shifts when staffing numbers are reduced. A formal high-level inquiry has been ordered to examine potential negligence, delay in sounding alarms, and physical gate security lapses at the prison complex. As tracking teams continue their operations across the hills and highways, the state administration is under increasing pressure to review security protocols across all district jails to prevent similar breakdowns in prison management.
