Guwahati Hotel Bilas Inn Firing Kills 5 After Dispute Between Property Owner And Leaseholder
A violent shooting inside a commercial hotel in Guwahati has left five people dead and one person battling serious injuries in a hospital. The deadly incident took place on Monday night at Hotel Bilas Inn, situated in a busy lane near Bora Service and Ulubari. Panic gripped the entire neighborhood as the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the building. Local residents and nearby shopkeepers rushed to see what had happened, only to find several victims bleeding on the floor. Police patrol teams were called immediately, rushing to seal off the premises and begin emergency rescue operations.
Initial inquiries revealed that a heated property fight had broken out between the owners of the hotel and the man who was running the place on a lease agreement. The disagreement over rental terms and management control had been growing bitter for some time. When both parties met inside the property to resolve their ongoing differences, tempers flared out of control. According to law enforcement officials, the confrontation turned violent, and the leaseholder pulled out a firearm and began shooting directly at the owner and accompanying family members.
The gun attack resulted in immediate bloodshed inside the building. Four persons died on the spot due to close-range bullet wounds before medical help could reach them. Two other injured individuals were quickly carried into ambulances and taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for urgent medical care. Doctors at the facility later confirmed that one more victim had died from critical bullet injuries, taking the total death toll to five. Another injured person, identified as a hotel worker, continues to receive medical treatment under close observation.
Guwahati Police Commissioner Partha Sarathi Mahanta and senior district officers rushed to the crime scene to supervise the situation personally. Senior investigators cordoned off the entire lane to gather forensic clues, bullet shells, and security camera footage. The police chief confirmed that four of the five deceased persons belonged to the same family connected to the property owner, while another victim was an associate from their native village. The sudden loss of multiple family members in a single attack has sent shockwaves across the city.
Following the shootings, police launched an immediate operation across the city to track down the attacker. Within an hour of the crime, police teams managed to locate and arrest the main accused, identified as the leaseholder Ghanakanta Gogoi. Officers also seized the weapon used during the attack, which was confirmed to be a licensed 32-bore pistol. The quick arrest brought some relief to the frightened local business community, though security forces remained deployed around the hotel to prevent any further breakdown of peace.
The incident has raised serious questions about commercial leasing disputes turning violent in busy urban areas. Business owners around Bora Service expressed deep sorrow and fear, saying that property disagreements should never lead to firearms being used against human lives. Investigators are now examining the legal paperwork of the hotel lease, previous complaint records between the two parties, and the background of the firearm license issued to the accused. Police officials stated that a detailed chargesheet will be presented before the court to ensure strict punishment for the killings.
