A nationwide Bharat Bandh is scheduled for August 21, 2024. Here’s what you need to know

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh today, August 21, 2024, in protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling on SC/ST reservations. The bandh has garnered strong support from SC/ST groups in Rajasthan.

According to The Times of India, police have been directed to boost security across all districts to prevent any unrest. DGP UR Sahoo stated that instructions have been issued to SPs to maintain law and order during the bandh. “We’ve advised our officials to engage with the groups organizing the bandh and coordinate with market associations to ensure smooth cooperation,” the DGP mentioned to TOI.

Reasons for the Bharat Bandh

The protest is in response to the Supreme Court’s recent decision allowing states to create sub-categories within SC and ST groups. The court’s ruling emphasized that priority in reservations should be given to those who need it the most. This decision has stirred significant controversy, and the Bharat Bandh aims to challenge and demand a reversal of the court’s ruling, which many see as unjust.

Security Precautions

In anticipation of potential violence, top police officials held a video conference to strategize and prepare. Divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers participated in the meeting to ensure public safety during the bandh.

Western Uttar Pradesh has been flagged as particularly sensitive, leading to heightened police vigilance in the region. Although public transport and private businesses may be disrupted, emergency services like ambulances are expected to operate as usual.
