Anti-CEC Protest Updates: SEM Court Releases Dipke After Peace Bond; Delhi Police Register 10 FIRs Over Assaults on Demonstrators

A Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) court in the national capital has ordered the conditional release of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke after he executed a formal peace and good behavior bond. The relief follows days of high tension and extensive preventive roundups conducted by law enforcement across central Delhi to suppress demonstrations organized against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar.

Dipke’s production before the executive magistrate came after he was placed under preventive custody under sections concerning breach of public peace ahead of the scheduled Lehra Do Tiranga assembly at Connaught Place’s Central Park. Legal representatives and rights advocates had strongly contested the detention, arguing that the administration used executive magistrate powers arbitrarily to curb peaceful calls for institutional transparency. Under the conditional release terms, the CJP leader furnished the requisite surety bond undertaking to maintain public order.

The release coincides with mounting administrative embarrassment for the police machinery. Facing sustained public pressure, legal notices, and relentless reporting from civil society groups and media organizations, Delhi Police registered at least 10 First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with alleged assaults perpetrated against demonstrators during the ongoing protests. For days, student unions and independent journalists had documented instances of unidentified individuals and security personnel physically manhandling, beating, and intimidating peaceful protesters holding the national flag.

The registration of criminal cases marks a significant acknowledgment of excess, coming after widespread public outrage over the heavy-handed containment tactics deployed across the city. Demonstrators, student coalitions, and civil rights bodies have reiterated that their agitation will continue until the central government orders an independent inquiry into voter list deletions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) framework and establishes full accountability within the Election Commission.
