Bangladesh Renews Sheikh Hasina Extradition Request During Indian Envoy Meeting With PM

Diplomatic discussions between Dhaka and New Delhi intensified as Bangladesh officially renewed its demand for India to expedite the extradition process of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The request was formally conveyed during a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister Office in Dhaka, where newly appointed Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi paid his first courtesy call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The bilateral engagement took place against the backdrop of renewed diplomatic strains following recent public statements made by Sheikh Hasina from India, where she has resided since being ousted from power following a student-led uprising.

According to official statements released by the Bangladesh Prime Minister Office, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of fostering a conducive environment to advance constructive bilateral relations between the neighboring nations. Alongside the extradition of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh officials reiterated their request for New Delhi to hand over individuals accused in the high-profile December killing of prominent youth activist Shahid Osman Hadi. Indian envoy Dinesh Trivedi conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reaffirmed India commitment to working alongside the government and people of Bangladesh in a positive and forward-looking manner.

The diplomatic exchange follows sharp reactions from Dhaka after Sheikh Hasina addressed a virtual media event hosted by a private journalists forum in New Delhi, during which she expressed a firm intention to return to Bangladesh. In response to concerns raised by the Bangladeshi foreign ministry, India Ministry of External Affairs clarified that the event was organized entirely by a private media entity without any official government involvement or endorsement. Following his interaction with the Prime Minister, the Indian High Commissioner engaged in further consultations with senior cabinet ministers in Dhaka before preparing to brief officials in New Delhi on the key outcomes of the bilateral talks.
