Bengaluru Central University to changes its name
Bengaluru Central University to change its name as Bengaluru City University. The talks about changing the name from Bengaluru Central University to Bengaluru City University is nothing new.It had started back from 2015.
Many people felt that using the term Central was giving a misleading description since it was a Karnataka state- run autonomous Institution
Usually universities are named based on where they are located. The region city is used in the university’s name such as Madras University Mumbai University Kolkata University Delhi University etc.
In India the Higher Education includes both public and private universities . These universities are recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University Grants Commission Act was passed in 1956.The public universities are supported by the Government of India and the State Governments.Where as the private universities are supported by various bodies. There are three types of universities namely Central universities or Union universities which are supervised by the department of Higher Education in the ministry of education. State universities which are usually established by a local Legislative Assembly act. State universities are run by the State Government of that particular state and territories of India . Deemed Universities or “Deemed to be university” under section 3 of the University Grants Commission act , Deemed Universities are given the status of Autonomy by the Department of Higher Education .
Bengaluru Central University being a public State University is a part of Association of Indian universities (AIU) & Association of Commonwealth universities (ACU ).
The thought of renaming it to Bengaluru City University started when Bangalore University decided to operate as three separate varsities.Bengaluru University was divided as Bengaluru North University with headquarters Jangamakote near Hoskote.Bengaluru Central University with headquarters Central college .Bengaluru University with headquarters jnana bharathi campus.
Prof S Japhet was appointed as the vice chancellor of the Bengaluru Central University (BCU) in 2017 and retired on Tuesday . The now appointed Vice Chancellor is Dr. Venugopal KR .After a lot of debate it was finalized that from the coming academic year Bengaluru Central University will be renamed as Bengaluru City University.
