Free Electric Bus Service Launched in Bengaluru for IT Employees Traveling to Electronic City

Bengaluru IT employees have a new reason to celebrate as a free electric bus service has been launched, offering seamless travel from Silk Institute Metro Station to Electronic City. This eco-friendly initiative is a collaboration between the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) and the Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA), aimed at reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable transport options.

Key Highlights

  • Free Electric Bus Service:
    • The new electric bus service will offer free travel for employees and residents commuting between Silk Institute Metro Station and the Electronic City area. This service operates across three daily trips and is designed to cater to the increasing demand from IT professionals and other employees in South Bengaluru who require efficient last-mile connectivity to their offices.
  • Enhanced Daily Ridership:
    • The existing four ELCITA-operated feeder buses already serve this route, carrying around 150-180 passengers each day. The addition of the BMTC electric bus aims to increase ridership to around 300 commuters, helping more people transition to greener commuting options.
  • Timings and Schedules:
    • The BMTC bus departs Silk Institute Metro Station at 8:15 am, while ELCITA buses offer services at 7:45 am, 8:45 am, 9:10 am, and 9:30 am. Evening buses depart Electronic City at 5:15 pm for the BMTC bus, while ELCITA buses operate at 4:45 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm, and 6:20 pm.
  • Collaborative Contract:
    • ELCITA and BMTC entered a short-term contract to run this service, leasing the BMTC electric bus for Rs 6 lakh over two months. The contract covers 120 km daily, covering both last-mile connectivity and additional trips within Electronic City. This service will continue until the Yellow Line of the Bengaluru Metro becomes operational, which will offer direct connectivity to the area.
  • Future Expansion Plans:
    • ELCITA has proposed six additional feeder routes from the Konappana Agrahara and Infosys Metro stations to further improve last-mile connectivity for employees commuting via the Yellow Line.

A Step Toward Green Commuting

This free electric bus service not only benefits IT employees with convenient travel options but also aligns with Bengaluru’s push toward environmentally friendly commuting solutions. The initiative showcases the city’s commitment to reducing private vehicle usage and promoting public transport.
