Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Stopped At Airport For Three Hours As AAP Slams Modi Govt Questioning Why BJP Ministers Never Face Same Action

A fresh political storm has erupted between the ruling party at the Centre and the state of Punjab after top state leadership was held up at the airport upon returning from an official tour abroad. Aam Aadmi Party leaders claimed that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was made to wait for almost three hours at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi. Party representatives came out publicly on social platforms and news channels to express strong outrage, describing the episode as deliberate harassment of a democratically elected leader and demanding an immediate end to the central government's arrogance.

The confrontation unfolded following the chief minister's return journey from France, where he had traveled to take part in an international food exhibition to promote agricultural goods produced by Punjab farmers. Even the initial travel had faced sharp administrative friction, as the central government had previously withheld political clearance for the overseas visit. It was only after the state government moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court and secured legal approval that the chief minister was able to take the trip to Europe to set up trade stalls for regional farm products.

According to statements issued by AAP leaders, airport authorities kept the chief minister waiting for hours without providing a clear official explanation for the delay. Senior party functionaries claimed that when Mann was finally allowed to exit and step into his waiting vehicle, airport officials ran up to him and issued a penalty challan of fifty thousand rupees. The party alleged that local ground officials admitted to being under heavy instructions from higher central authorities to carry out the checks and create difficulties for the state delegation.

Delhi party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj took to social media to voice harsh criticism against the central authorities, remarking that the central government's arrogance must come to an end. Drawing a sharp comparison with popular traditional lore, Bharadwaj noted that even the arrogance of mythical figures met its defeat on the day of Dussehra. Party media coordinators echoed the sentiment, asking whether any other sitting chief minister in the history of the country had ever been made to sit inside an airport terminal for three hours and handed an arbitrary fine simply for returning home from a work tour.

The incident has triggered sharp questions from state leaders regarding selective rules and unequal enforcement across political lines. AAP spokespersons demanded to know why chief ministers and senior cabinet ministers from the Bharatiya Janata Party never experience such delays, interrogations, or penalties when they return from foreign trips. They pointed out that central ministers and ruling party leaders travel across global destinations constantly, yet airport security lines and customs counters clear them instantly with VIP courtesies. Party members questioned why federal agencies only remember strict clearance codes and paperwork checks when non-BJP chief ministers touch down in the national capital.

Opposition voices in Punjab, however, offered a contrasting view of the events. Leaders from regional rival parties claimed that the delay at the airport had nothing to do with political revenge and was instead linked to standard luggage screening and customs declarations required for international arrivals. Opponents also criticized the chief minister for traveling abroad with family members at public expense at a time when the state is battling pressing administrative issues such as farm struggles and illegal trade problems.

Legal and constitutional observers note that the repeated friction between the central administration and state governments run by opposition parties is creating deep strain in federal relations. When protocol arrangements for an elected head of a state are disrupted at international checkpoints, it quickly becomes an issue of state pride and constitutional dignity. AAP leaders emphasized that disrespecting an elected chief minister amounts to disrespecting the mandate of the three crore citizens of Punjab who chose him to lead the state.

The central government and airport authorities have not issued a detailed public statement explaining the specific grounds for the delay or the nature of the fine. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has signaled that it will raise the issue on every platform, demanding transparency regarding who ordered the check and calling for equal protocol standards for all elected leaders, regardless of which party they belong to.
