Telangana Congress Govt Accelerates ₹850 Crore Warangal Airport Project with Smart Terminal and 2.5 KM Runway
The dream of air connectivity for the historical city of Warangal is finally taking flight as the Telangana Congress government has accelerated the redevelopment of the Mamnoor Airport. In a significant move in May 2026, administrative hurdles have been cleared for the construction of a state of the art facility with an estimated investment of ₹850 crore. The new plan includes the extension of the existing Nizam era runway from 1.8 kilometers to a robust 2.5 kilometers, allowing for the operation of A320 type aircraft. A key highlight of the project is the new domestic passenger terminal building, which will span 6,800 square meters. This modern terminal is designed to handle a peak hour capacity of 850 passengers, offering a seamless travel experience for the people of northern Telangana.
The progress of this project is a result of sustained efforts across different administrations. The previous BRS government played a crucial role in initiating the revival of the airport by conducting early surveys and beginning the process of identifying the necessary land. In July 2023, the then state cabinet had formally approved the proposal to develop Mamnoor, marking the first major step toward its modern resurrection. Building on this momentum, the current Telangana Congress government has moved swiftly to resolve land acquisition issues, recently allocating over ₹205 crore to acquire an additional 253 acres required for the runway extension. This collaborative progress ensures that the long standing demand of the local population is finally being addressed with financial and political commitment.
Beyond just a runway, the airport is set to become a hub for technological innovation in aviation. The smart terminal will feature self check in kiosks and advanced baggage handling systems to reduce waiting times for travelers. Furthermore, the facility is being positioned as a strategic center for pilot training, which will help ease the air traffic congestion currently experienced at Hyderabad Shamshabad and Begumpet airports. By shifting training operations to Warangal, the government aims to create a dedicated ecosystem for aviation education while simultaneously boosting local commerce. The inclusion of a new Air Traffic Control tower and comprehensive firefighting infrastructure ensures that the airport meets international safety standards from day one of its operations.
The economic impact of the Warangal Airport on the region cannot be overstated. As the second largest city in Telangana, Warangal serves as a gateway to several industrial and tourism hubs. The improved connectivity will likely trigger a real estate boom and attract fresh investments into the local textile and IT sectors. While the current 2.5 kilometer runway is a major upgrade, there are already discussions about future expansions to accommodate even larger wide bodied aircraft. For now, the focus remains on completing the terminal and runway within the next two to three years. The successful revival of this historic airstrip will stand as a testament to the infrastructure vision of both the previous BRS and the current Congress governments, working toward a common goal of regional prosperity.
