WhatsApp overtakes CRED in UPI volume in June 2026 as PhonePe maintains market lead
The competitive landscape of India's digital payments ecosystem witnessed a notable shift on 24 July 2026 when the National Payments Corporation of India released its monthly performance figures for June. According to official data, WhatsApp Pay recorded 150.48 million Unified Payments Interface transactions, successfully overtaking CRED, which processed 141.78 million transactions during the same period. The change in positions highlights the changing user engagement patterns across digital messaging platforms as daily peer-to-peer transfers gain traction. Interestingly, the market shift coincided with CRED founder Kunal Shah stepping down from the fintech platform to take on his new role as global chief executive officer at WhatsApp, while Miten Sampat assumed duties as interim leader at CRED. In May 2026, CRED held the higher ground with 157 million transactions compared to WhatsApp's volume of over 150 million.
While transaction volume showed a clear gain for messaging-based payments, financial value metrics tell a vastly different story about user behavior. CRED maintained its strong lead in transaction value by processing payments worth 55117 crore rupees in June, capturing a 1.91 percent share of total UPI transaction value. In comparison, WhatsApp recorded a transaction value of 11392 crore rupees, representing a 0.39 percent value share. The disparity underlines CRED's strong focus on high-value credit card bill clearing and premium financial services, whereas WhatsApp primarily facilitates high-frequency, low-ticket peer transfers among everyday app users.
At the top of the market, Walmart-backed PhonePe comfortably maintained its position as the leading UPI app in India. The platform processed 10.48 billion transactions during June 2026, down slightly from 10.73 billion in May, while marking its fourth consecutive month above the 10 billion milestone. PhonePe captured 46.15 percent of total UPI volume and 49.07 percent of total transaction value after processing 14.19 lakh crore rupees. Google Pay held the second position with 7.41 billion transactions, commanding a 32.61 percent volume share and a 33.44 percent value share. Together, PhonePe and Google Pay controlled 78.76 percent of total UPI transaction volume and 82.51 percent of overall value, demonstrating strong consolidation at the top of the market.
Analyzing the broader market trend reveals how volume and value metrics serve vastly different commercial purposes in Indian fintech. Platforms like WhatsApp leverage large existing social chat networks to drive micro-transactions, expanding digital adoption across diverse demographics. On the other hand, platforms focusing on high-ticket bill payments build monetization strategies around high net worth user profiles rather than raw volume counts. Additionally, with total nationwide UPI volume adjusting slightly to 22.72 billion transactions worth 28.92 lakh crore rupees in June, competition among mid-tier platforms is driving rapid feature expansion to secure user loyalty.
Overall, the latest operational data highlights a dynamic and maturing digital payment ecosystem. While top market leaders continue to hold major market shares, rising volume from conversational messaging platforms signals shifting consumer preferences for daily transfers. As fintech platforms introduce new payment features and financial products, the competition between high-volume daily transfer apps and high-value financial platforms will continue to shape the future of Indian digital finance.
